Dantina Vegetation Management - Slashing, Spraying, Light Clearing, Discing.

Weeds

Lantana
Lantana is toxic to many animals, and in areas where
stock graze it is responsible for stock deaths.
Forming dense thickets it excludes, smothers
and out-competes native vegetation, and may restrict access
to waterways. Lantana thickets provide shelter for pest animal species.
As a woody shrub, its presence increases the heat and intensity of bush fires,
and lifts bushfires higher into the forest canopy,
creating further damage to natural vegetation.

 Rats Tail Grass
An aggressive perennial, tufted grass to 75 centimetres high
very similar in appearance to giant rats tail grass.
Leaves tough and hairless. Seed heads vary in shape but are
generally up to 25 centimetres long. Seed heads initially look
like rats tails and eventually change into a broad
pyramid shape when flowering.
Seeds an orange-brown colour.
Readily outcompetes native grasses and groundcover and can
greatly increase fire hazard within natural areas.
Tough leaves and stems of this weed have been
known to loosen the teeth of grazing cattle and horses.

Groundsel bush
Vegetation pale green with wedge-shaped
lobed leaves alternately arranged along each branch.
White, cream or yellow flowers are spherical in shape.
Fruit straw-coloured or brown and characterised by tufts of white hair
giving it a fluffy appearance.
Groundsel bush rapidly colonises degraded land or low-lying
 poorly drained environments, out-competing
native vegetation and impacting on native wildlife populations.

Slashing can be used to prevent tall growing weeds from flowering and setting seed.
Slashing can also be used to remove unpalatable
or inedible weeds left after stock have selectively grazed a paddock and to prevent
these weeds taking over. It may also encourage the growth of more prostrate,
 less desirable species.
